It seems that some people are born with style, however, style doesn’t come easy to everybody. Not having a certain style is nothing to be ashamed of. Style is something that can be worked on, and overtime and practice you can get better when choosing what to wear.

Get into People Watching

Okay, stalking is a strong word, but observing others can help you develop a sense of style. Study what other women are wearing and take mental notes. What is it that you like about their style and is there anything they are wearing that you would add to your wardrobe? Before purchasing a similar outfit, think if it would look good on you? Imagine yourself wearing it and ask yourself if you would look good and would you be comfortable going out in public in it?

If you think it would then write down a description of the item or take a mental note. Sometimes it is difficult to remember the outfit so jotting it down on a piece of paper or storing it on your phone might help. If you like it but can’t see yourself wearing the outfit, don’t take note. Many times people fill their closet with clothes they will never wear.

Use Social Media to Help You

Social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are helpful tools when creating your own style. There are plenty of fashionable people posting pictures and videos of what they wear on a regular basis.

Find celebrities and other people whose style you admire. If you struggle remembering what the outfits look like you can either save the images to your phone or you can take a screenshot. Create a specific folder on your phone for these images. This way, when you are shopping online or in a store, you will have easy access to your files.  Trying to find images mixed in with all different files can be frustrating.

There is no Shame in Copying

Every person in the fashion industry copies from others now and again. In fact, many people enjoy the fact that their personal style inspires others. Sometimes people get feelings of guilt when they recreate someone else’s style, but don’t worry about it, that is how fashion has been working. Perhaps don’t copy your best friend’s outfit, but taking some ideas won’t harm anyone.

Don’t get caught up in all the Latest Trends

Don’t get obsessed about being “fashionable”. The aim here is to create your own personal style, without becoming a slave to new trends. Don’t confuse “fashion” and style as they are two very different things. There is a lot of pressure put on women to appear trendy, which makes it extremely difficult and expensive to keep up with the latest fashion. Personal style on the other hand is about making an everyday look that helps reflect your personal choice and your lifestyle. You can still purchase clothing items that are currently fashionable, as long as they fit in with your personal style.

When choosing clothes, the best option is to find something that represents you. Choosing clothes that are suitable for different occasions is vital. Purchasing items that work with other clothes you already have will help. Don’t ever wear clothes that you hate wearing. It will only end up ruining your day because you will feel uncomfortable.

Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

Changing your look might be terrifying. Trying something you like, but feeling nervous about wearing it out in public is normal. You might be worried about others laughing and mocking the way you look. Most people get these feelings when they wear an outfit outside their comfort zone. Keep in mind that there is a major difference in not liking an outfit in comparison to being afraid of wearing something you like.

There is really no harm in trying to wear the clothing item once. After wearing it, and you don’t feel comfortable then forget about it. At least you tried to push your insecurities aside for a while. However, you might be pleasantly surprised how great you feel when you are wearing it.

You might be open to the idea of trying outfits that you might never have thought you would get away with once your confidence grows. Once you stop focusing on what others think you will be on track to trying bolder outfits. As time goes by you will be surprised how many outfits will make you shine, many of which you thought would never have suited you.

Organize your Wardrobe

It doesn’t matter if you have a huge walk-in closet or just a tiny reach-in one, it is vital that you keep it well organized. Putting all clothes that match together will help you if you decide what to wear in a rush. Planning outfits and neatly putting them in the right areas will help you plan ahead. Here are some tips on how to manage your wardrobe:

  • Turn your hangers backward: To help you avoid wearing the same clothes frequently you can turn the hangers backward for clothes that you have recently worn. This simple hack will remind you that you have recently worn that item.
  • Have a specific hanger for scarves: To make your scarves wrinkle-free and easily accessible, hang all of them on one hanger.
  • Use hang tags: You can make your own product swing tags to help you organize each piece of clothing.
  • Stack certain items together: Items like jeans and sweaters can all be stacked on top of each other.

A well-organized closet will make your life easier, and it will make choosing what to wear a lot less stressful.

Get Advice

Asking your friend who has a good sense of style can help. Networking with others has never been easier due to modern technology. Why not send your friend pictures of outfits you’re thinking about wearing or clothes you are thinking about buying.

Most people find it great that they inspire others when it comes to style, so don’t be afraid to ask. More often than not, your friend will take it as a compliment that you have asked him or her for advice.

Bringing your friend on a shopping trip can help sometimes. Be careful that your friend doesn’t try to convince you to purchase clothes that you don’t like. The likelihood of you wearing the outfit in the future is low, so don’t waste your money. Although advice can be great at times, remember that it is your style and not someone else’s.

Summary

Many people like to focus on the price when it comes to choosing what to wear, but it is possible to pick out a great-looking outfit for a fraction of the price of a clothing item from one of the top labels. However, don’t just purchase items that are reduced in price. Just because you’re getting a good deal doesn’t necessarily mean you are buying something that fits in with your personal style.
