He is one of the world’s very rarest creatures. In fact, there’s only one Cookie Monster. So the koalas and staff at Taronga Zoo in Sydney were very lucky to receive a visit from the hairy blue eating machine.

Cookie Monster and a host of celebrities, including John Cleese, Ken Done and Kelly Osborne have been lending their voice to the beloved city zoo as it celebrates its centenary this year.

Taronga Zoo, nestled on the shore of Sydney Harbour, opened on 7 October 1916. It is home to more than 2,600 animals representing some 340 species and is a popular visit for locals and tourists alike… even Muppets.

Taronga and its sister Western Plains Zoo are particularly famous for giraffes, chimpanzees, koalas and seals and are involved in a variety of successful breeding programs and conservation work.

Check out the recent arrival of a beautiful baby giraffe:

Taronga Zoo trivia: ‘Taronga’ is a Native Australian word meaning ‘beautiful view’, perfectly describing the harbour vista enjoyed its residents and visitors.
